Here's an impromptu audio interview I just did with my colleagues Moneen Daley Harte and Jay Ginsberg, two brilliant producers and highly successful voice talents.

We shared amusing memories of our early days in the business, the famous voices we've worked with, and our unique perspective on teaching and performing voice over.

I think you'll really enjoy the interview. Listen here:

From the desk of Susan Berkley
May 26, 2010

Dear Friend

On the surface, it seems like getting started in voice over should be easy and simple, right?

You just keep sending in your demo until you get a lucky break, audition, and land your first gig – and from there, your fame will skyrocket.

So why haven’t you launched your new career? Is it because you just aren’t sure how to get started? Is it because you are afraid to invest your valuable time and money into a program that you aren’t sure will work? Or is it simply because you’re afraid to fail at something you’ve dreamed about for so long?

There HAS to be a way for you to give it a try – to avoid the biggest “Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda” mistake of your life.

Does any of this sound familiar?
  • You haven’t put all your effort into starting a new career. You’re constantly wasting time “getting ready to get ready,” and you keep second-guessing yourself. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could give you the information you need to take concrete steps toward the voice over career of your dreams?

  • You’re worried that starting a new career at this point in your life will be too time-consuming, and that it’ll take you so long to learn everything you need to know, you’ll be too old to enjoy the rewards of your time investment. What if you could learn what you need to know to get started, quickly and easily?

  • You’re afraid to compete against the millions of other voice over professionals who have more experience than you do. What if you could gain the magnetic confidence you need to draw casting agents to you?

  • You and your spouse (or maybe JUST your spouse) thinks this simply isn’t a good time to make a time and money investment in a new career. Wouldn’t you be ecstatic to discover a quick, inexpensive training tool that provided you with the knowledge you need to blast through the learning curve?

  • Your friends have laughed at your idea of starting a new career at this time in your life. What if you had the last laugh when the next time you're out with them someone says "Hey, haven't I heard your voice before?"

It all comes down to one thing: Getting your hands on the tools and information you need to follow your passion and make a good living using the power and prestige of your voice.

I know what many of you are probably thinking right now. You’re thinking, “I’ve already completed an entire career! I don’t have the time to get my hands on the tools and information I need to start a new one!” Or maybe some of you are thinking, “I’ve already read tons of material about joining the voice over industry, and I know there’s no quick way to do it.” And the rest of you are probably thinking, “Even if I know what I’m supposed to do, there are so many other voice talents out there – why would a casting director choose me?”

I’ll give you a minute to have all those thoughts – and then hear me out.

Ready?

I’m going to give you the PRECISE tools and information you need to streamline your process, shorten your learning curve and ultimately begin the career of your dreams.

You probably understand that having the right tools and information is important. But do you know HOW important?

Consider this: Most ultra-successful voice over talents started off from ground zero, just as you’re doing. They did tons of leg work, sent out hundreds of demo CDs, attended dozens of auditions, and slowly worked their way up the voice over ladder. Others were luckier, and found a lucky break by chance, starting at a higher rung – but because they didn’t have the right tools, they made serious career-killing mistakes and had to start over, from scratch.

So why is it critical to have the right tools and information?

1. You can avoid the biggest career-killing mistake beginners make that will lead you down the wrong path.
2. You can learn “insider secrets” that will help you find auditions – and get nice gigs with little effort – even against veteran pros!
3. You can profit from little-known ‘hidden’ voice over opportunities, with lots of profit potential.
4. You can learn how you can launch a voice over career from anywhere – you don’t have to live in New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco!
5. You can dramatically shorten your learning curve so you can start your dream career FAST!

I had my first in-studio in Boston this morning!!! Whoopee! It was for a :30 TV spot for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont and took only about 30 minutes total. It was completely awesome! I was relaxed, everyone had fun, and hopefully the client will use me again - I know the production house will.

I must give you kudos for helping it go so smoothly - I knew what to wear, what not to eat beforehand, how to be relaxed, how to keep everyone in a jovial mood (all 7 of them), and - most importantly - how to give them what they were listening for. Not bad for doing this less than a year.

Mike McGonegal
Wilton, NH

Now you understand how critical the right tools and information are to the success of becoming a voice over talent. But still, how do you get those tools and that information? It can be so difficult to learn. If you’ve already finished one career, you probably don’t feel like you have the time to read all the literature about getting started in voice over – and if you’ve read more than one book so far, you’ve probably seen conflicting information!

To make it worse, you don’t know which authors to trust, which books to choose, and which paths to follow.

That is why I’m so excited to share with you what I have come up with – it’s a uniquely effective, “double-dose” success program you can complete in the comfort of your own home.

What if you had all the shortcuts? What if you could leapfrog over all the frustration and time it would take to learn this on your own?

You can! And I’m going to show you how.

But first …

Who am I and why should you listen to me?

I’m Susan Berkley, one of the hottest voices in voice over today. I’m the voice behind AT&T and Citibank, to name a couple, and I have thousands of commercial and narration credits to my name.

But it wasn't always like this. At one time I had to work 3 jobs just to keep a roof over my head. But I wouldn't trade that experience for the world because it's what has led me to where I am today.

I started in radio. On average, a DJ makes $13,000 a year – not a very big salary, but they make up for it in perks. In the industry, we refer to those perks as the “3 Frees”: concert tickets, beer, and babes. I worked at a classic rock station in Florida. The concert tickets were nice for a while, but there’s just only so much head splitting rock and roll you can stand. I don’t drink, and I certainly wasn’t interested in dating any of my beer-swigging, good ol’ boy male listeners.

So I moved to New York to make it in the Number One Market, the Big Apple.

One thing I didn’t figure on was how much more expensive it was to live in Manhattan than it was in Florida. I had to work 3 jobs to make ends meet. I waited tables, and I was a telemarketer selling deodorant crystals to funeral homes. Also, I worked for Renta Yenta, a singing telegram company. I had to walk down Seventh Avenue dressed as one of Santa’s helper elves on a sweltering July day, to deliver singing invitations to department store buyers for a Christmas-themed fashion show.

Eventually I got my big break working as a traffic reporter for The Howard Stern Show…that was fun for awhile, I met a lot of famous people and became pretty famous myself…but part of the job was getting humiliated on the air every day. Plus I was still only making about $25,000 a year, even though I was on the #1 rated morning show in America. You couldn’t get any better than that, but I was miserable and very, very broke.

What was supposed to be living your dream was starting to feel like a prison to me.

So I decided to quit and go into voice over. I’d already been doing it on the side…mostly by accident when people heard me on the air and hired me for a job. Whenever I worked, I made more money in an hour than I did in an entire week on the air. I knew I wanted to do this full time.

There was one problem … I didn’t have any idea about how I was going to do it.

One day, I did a voice over job with a male talent, he was getting into a jaguar sedan and I was fishing in my pocket for a subway token. I invited him to lunch and he graciously accepted.

Over lunch he opened up his laptop and showed me something that completely rocked my world.

He showed me his contact management software and his tickler file which reminded him to stay in gentle touch with his prospects and clients so he could be top of mind when they had the need.

A lightbulb went off. Being a successful voice talent is NOT just about your voice! In fact, it’s mostly not about your voice. It occurred to me that if I wanted to be successful in voice over I needed to learn more about what this sales and marketing thing was all about. I had to look at myself as a business owner, not just another actor – a commodity like thousands of other great voices.

I looked to see if there was actually a system, something I could apply to voice over as I started my business. Clearly, most of the other voice actors I spoke with were not using any system at all. All they were doing was trying to find agents and get auditions. They did audition after audition and the odds were terrible! And they were dejected and having to work these depressing day jobs they hated. They were what I call Hyphens…voice actor hyphen waiters, or voice actor hyphen computer person, or voice actor hyphen sales person … trying to squeeze their voice over career into whatever tiny slice of free time they had.

I enrolled in a course for business owners and discovered that there was this whole world of entrepreneurs out there, people sharing their expertise, providing tremendous value and then making offers and using that as a vehicle to build their business and make a difference in the world.

So I started my voice over business from under the loft bed in my tiny NYC apartment with nothing more than a phone and my voice over demo, and piles and piles of sales and marketing books.

I actually created a voice over sales and marketing system for myself using all of the very best ideas from the sales and marketing geniuses I studied.

Guess what? It worked! I started booking business and before long, I was on my way.

I had found my calling, my life’s work…doing voice over and teaching it to others.

Before long, I had a thriving voice over business and a busy voice over school in NY. Now, The Great Voice Company has become a major audio production and training company serving wonderful people from all over the world. So I’ve learned a thing or two about what it takes to be truly successful making money and having a great life doing what you love.

That’s really what I’m here to teach you about, and that’s why I’m so excited to share my experience with you through my Voice over Step by Step program.

PLUS, NO ONE has ever broken it down like this, into palatable pieces of information organized in exactly the right way to get you on your way to the new career (and fame) you truly want. Until now. That’s why I’m so proud to share with you Voice over Step by Step.

I just wanted to let you know that my very new V/O career is taking off quite nicely. I am represented by PC-Goenner talent agency (Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton) and have done five jobs since January.

My website is up and running and I am visiting various production companies to let them know of my availability. Thanks to the many good ideas you gave me, I hope to be full time in a couple of years. Warmest regards and many thanks.

Here’s what you get in “Voice over Step by Step”
Course begins Monday June 14

Each week for 4 weeks beginning Monday June 14 and ending on Monday July 5, I will release 6 to 7 daily lessons on the Voice over Step by Step forum. Here’s just a sampling of what you’ll get with my breakthrough program.

Part 1: Getting Started on the Right Foot, Right Away
“Get crystal clear on your voice over success strategy and save years of wasted effort”

When I speak with beginning and emerging voice talent I am struck by how almost everyone spins their wheels trying to get started. They feel frustrated, discouraged and like they're wasting their time and their dreams.

My unique perspective can really make a difference in your voice over career – I cannot sit on the sidelines and allow so many dreams to be crushed due to a lack of understanding and confusion about how to really become successful at this craft. That’s what this first module is about: how to get started (or move to the next level) like you never have before.

During Part 1, throughout Days 1 and 2, we’ll cover:
  • The 10 biggest career-killing voice over mistakes that will lead you down the road to nowhere (note: these mistakes can stop you in your tracks and you may be surprised to hear about them – for example, don’t let a friend in the music business produce your demo).

  • My Proven Formula that will take you from one painful and humiliating cattle call audition after another to having your phone ringing off the hook with people calling you for work and paying the prices you are asking.

  • The Number One Thing you MUST have to nail the jobs you really want, the jobs that pay well, and the jobs that will build your voice over career (and it has nothing to do with your voice!).

  • The most important thing you must do to get started in voice over (again, it has nothing to do with your voice!).

  • How to determine where to start based on your unique talents, certifications, and interests outside of voice over.
Part 2: The 7 Core Voice over Competencies
“This is where we lay the foundation for your voice over success”

It’s essential to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses to determine a baseline measurement of where you stand for each of the 7 Core Voice over Competencies.

On each of Days 3 through 9, we’ll cover a Core Voice over competency. These include voice quality, diction, reading and timing, voice acting, relationship and networking, technical engineering and marketing.

During Part 2, we’ll cover:
  • How to improve your voice quality – and which aspects will turn into your "signature" sound.

  • How to find a great voice over coach to assist you in improving your voice quality.

  • The 3 main components of good diction – and how knowing this can transform your voice

  • Activities and exercises to get your voice warmed up (You want to protect your voice, don't you?)

  • A checklist for determining your voice acting strengths and weaknesses. You'll know EXACTLY how to improve your voice acting once you know this.

  • My secrets for how to nail any script (you'll love these easy techniques to help you with your reading and timing)

  • A script for promoting your voice over services at any networking event. You won't even have to think -- you'll naturally know what to say!

  • The most important question to ask people at networking events. Know this and you'll be amazed at how quickly your pipeline fills with gigs.

  • The 3 types of home studios for recording voice over -- don't worry, even if you're not technically savvy I'll still walk you through it all

  • What the voice over business is NOT (you may be surprised – it’s not your voice, your agent, your auditions or even your unique skills behind the microphone!).

  • The average number of contacts it will take before someone will recognize your name and voice (you’ll be surprised!).
Part 3: Get Going!
“Demos and more.
From dreaming to DOING. I’ll guide you there!”

Once you know what you need to know about your voice and about the voice over business, it’s time to make some concrete progress toward launching your career.

Of course, you still have some footwork to do, so we’re going to discuss during this portion of the program exactly what you must know and do before you invest in a home studio – including the creation of your Voice over demo – an absolute key to marketing yourself.

During Part 3, Days 10 to 14, we’ll cover:
  • How you can be miles ahead of the competition by learning one simple lesson.

  • Determining your niche – and finding potential projects that match it. This is one of the keys to filling your pipeline with gigs.

  • A word of caution about niches – and keeping an open mind. Know this and you won't make the same mistakes others make when they try and pick a niche.

  • My "secret" list of viable target markets you probably never thought of (nor has your competition for that matter)

  • Guidelines for finding a good coach who will shorten your time to market, help you avoid embarrassing and expensive mistakes, help you maximize your time and money investments and introduce you to job opportunities.

  • The Number One thing you MUST do when you make a demo (and the biggest mistake 99% new voice over talent do that derails their careers before they even get off the ground)

  • How to, and why you MUST, find a local recording studio. (Yes, not having a local recording studio can actually hurt you)
Part 4: How to create your home-based voice over business
“Setting up your simple, inexpensive home studio and a flexible,
home-based voice over business”

Remember how I said you can launch and execute a successful voice over business from home? Well, you can … as long as you know how to do it correctly.

Setting up an inexpensive, yet professional home studio will save you time and money, and is simpler and less expensive than you may think. We’re going to cover some of the most important aspects so you know exactly what to do.

During Part 4, Days 15 to 22, we’ll cover:
  • The 3 types of home studios – their costs, pros and cons, and which type will work best for yo

  • How to choose a USB microphone and why I recommend one (the pros and cons).

  • How to select, install and use recording software on your home recording system. (It's easier than you think.)

  • Why it is essential to your success to buy a pair of headphones designed for professional recording. (Yes it's worth the investment and I'll spell it out for you.)

  • Why you cannot rely on your computer speakers alone to judge your sound quality. (This is one of those mistakes that will mark you as an "amateur")

  • The different types of sound monitors and which ones you ABSOLUTELY need and which ones are "nice to have"

  • Where should you set up your home studio? No worries, I'll walk you through which room you should choose and why

  • Don't have a room? No worries, I'll also walk you though several inexpensive options for creating an acceptable recording space.

  • How to practice – it’s not as simple as sitting down and recording your voice!

  • Why you need to keep a practice log. (Hint -- this is a key to your success)
Part 5: Get to work
“How to form lasting profitable partnerships with great voice over clients”

Now that you know how to become completely prepared for becoming a voice over talent, it’s time to consider generating the leads, networking, sending your demo packages, making the sales and GETTING TO WORK!

Launching a career is about more than just sitting around, waiting for an audition to come up, and then repeating the process until you finally get a call back and then repeating that process until you finally land a job. You’ve got to have a marketing plan, a roadmap to follow that will take you from dreamer to do-er .

During Part 5, Days 23 to 30, we’ll cover:
  • The down and dirty of “pay to play” lead generating services like Voice 123 – how they work, if they work, and when they work.

  • The importance of networking (yes, it’s an “old fashioned” idea, but it sticks).

  • My PERSONAL strategies for networking successfully.

  • Easy ways to simplify your networking by using today’s technology (plus I'll throw in some time-saving tips as well)

  • Your first impression: how to make it great – and powerful – so you get that all-important call back!

  • Why you MUST research companies before sending demo packages! (This can cost you A LOT of wasted time and money, not to mention leaving a bad impression.)

  • Should you get an agent or not? I'll share the pros and cons so you can decide if it's for you – and if you do, I'll tell you how.

  • What you MUST do when you're marketing and selling (don't worry; I'll break it down so it's easy AND you will get results!)

  • The nitty gritty of making contact with people, whether they’re agents, producers or other prospects.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for providing us with all the extraordinary teachers who gave us tons of wonderful information to help us get started. I loved being a part of the class. Thanks again for all your stupendous work in putting this program together.

We’ll send you all the course materials and you’ll observe, listen and learn as your instructors put the performers through their paces. This is an online forum only for people who are taking the course. We’ll post the audio and video of each call, our resource rolodex and other special bonuses. You’ll be able to network with other course participants, make new friends, ask questions and share your successes

This sounds fantastic, Susan, but how much is it all going to cost me?

Great question – and before I answer it I have a couple of my own.

How much is it worth to you to accelerate your learning curve, avoid the biggest newbie mistakes and get in with the pros as you quickly launch the career of your dreams?

How much is it worth to you to learn, from an experienced professional, exactly what you need to know to start the career you’ve dreamed of?

Is it worth $5,000? $2,500?

It certainly is, and maybe even more. But you wont pay anywhere near that amount.

The tuition for this program is $1497 but because I like to reward those who take fast action, if you register by Friday June 11, your 'early bird' investment will be only $997 with an easy payment plan available.

Voice over Step By Step is designed to rocket your voice over career from start to success more quickly than you can imagine.

If you take the program seriously, participate fully, and follow my advice, you will probably make back your investment in your first few jobs.

This is going to save you the time and aggravation struggling through the trial and error – and audition after audition after audition – you’d experience following a more traditional path to a voice over career.

And imagine how much more satisfying your life will be when you hear your voice on the radio or the TV, and your friends and strangers alike recognize it. Imagine how exciting it will be to land job after job, right at the start of your career, simply because you had the courage to invest in yourself. What is THAT worth to you?

Plus, you’re protected by my 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. All I ask is that you make a sincere effort to listen to the 30-day training and participate in the 4 weekly teleseminars. If, after 60 days, you don’t feel like you’ve gotten your investment’s worth, box everything up and send it back to me for a full refund – no hassles, no questions!

I stand behind my products. I KNOW this training has the potential for transforming your business as long as you give it your best effort.

But, in case you disagree, you have 60 days after receiving the product to decide whether it is for you. If it isn’t, I’ll refund your investment.

Ready to get started? Or do you still have a few more questions?

Here are some of the most common concerns and my responses:

Concern: I don’t have time to do this – to take the course or to launch a new career.
Response: You can audition from home in just a few minutes, and the average booking takes an hour to complete (great pay for about 60 minutes of fun and exhilaration!). This course will guide you through simplified, bite-sized pieces at your own pace – preventing “information overload.” Go at your own pace by listening to a little bit every day for 30 days – or dive in whenever you have time to dedicate a few minutes.

Concern: There’s too much competition out there.
Response: Who says that … other voice talent? Could it be they want to discourage you from getting into the business? Literally thousands of commercials are recorded every day. The average person hears 3,000 commercials every day. There is absolutely no risk of fewer opportunities. In fact, it’s just the opposite. With the explosion of the web, social media, smart phone apps and other new media outlets, the opportunities are unlimited!

Concern: The course probably costs too much money.
Response: This one is a laugher. My Mastermind classes and Boot Camps cost upwards of $7,500. This course is being offered for a brief period at a fraction of those fees. Incidentally, you will probably make your investment back in your first job or two.

Ready to reserve your spot?
